....snip.... They placed a hold on my order until Tuesday while verifying my educational status, then sent me a notice the next day (Wednesday) telling me that my order is being processed.....snip...

How did they verify your educational status? I've ordered 3 personal computers from Apple over the years, but I don't ever remember having to verify my educational status as a teacher.

So basically you pay like this for your phone now:

    1. Minutes
    2. Data on broadband
    3. Power for microcell

ATT should pay you for this.

The calls still go through the AT&T network. How do you think a call gets from the Microcell to the person you're calling?

I don't see Apple getting more than 10% marketshare anytime soon unless they do something significant.

If they have the richest 10% than that's important as they probably buy 50% of software, to Apple $499 machines don't matter as the users are (generally) ignorant (as they don't want to spend a lot on a computer so generally don't care about them) and are therefore more likely to get Spyware/Viruses, they also don't buy any software (except possibly Office), Apple *wants* those users on Windows.

Also their laptop share is already 12% in the US, with more stores that could grow to about 20% easily.

    Really nice for the schools.

Really irrelevant for the schools. I can't say this will change our purchasing strategy in this area either way, the discount is too small to matter really.

It's up to innovative schools to decide whether, and how, iPads have a role in schools. They might have good uses in classrooms, libraries, labs, reading clubs, alongside computers, instead of computers, or who knows.

Except they don't support things like Jmol. They're too big to go into a pocket, they can't be shared around like books, they'll need recharging if they're used heavily. The ipad is a lot of things, sure, but there's lots of things it isn't, too.

Who cares??? its a $500 device that can replace all computer needs of any student. Period.

I bet my students can't wait to run products like AutoCad, Final Cut Pro, Logic, Sonar and Visual Studio, on the ipad. They'll be so excited I'm sure.

It's just a glorified web slate and note taker. By no means bad but I don't see any students where I work, or staff for that matter, rushing to get one. We may buy one or two for R&D.

The fact NO site has seemingly reviewed any of UBI's release is very suspicious about their quality.

Is there a review Embargo in place I wonder?

Yes until today. Lineup is quite weak as no Mario. Every Nintendo launch needs a Mario

Where did they say in the website that you need to buy antivirus software?

And did they compare the build quality or just specs?

It sounds really nice, but... perhaps someone got out the press release too soon. The Dutch airline KLM, one of the partners mentioned in the article, are apparently not aware of the deal and respond in surprise to the news. They also say Air France, KLM's owner, nows nothing.

    The article, in Dutch: http://www.nu.nl/news/885979/54/%27iPod-aansluiting_in_vliegtuigen%27.html

KLM reacted in surprise at the announcement. 'It is true that there where talks, but the changes of this happening are now/at the moment smaller than ever', said a spokesman from the Dutch airline.

(Translation by me. I'm not quite sure if the spokesman means 'now', ie. since the announcement, or 'at the moment', ie someting went wrong at the talks.)

This may be true - further analysis is needed. Either way, concrete roads (like interstates and state highways) are much more resistant to this type of wear than asphalt. And again, the real culprits are soil conditions and thermal expansion/contraction.

If that's the case, then 18 wheels are going to heat up a road faster than four. I'd also like to see the impact of braking on road surfaces. I'm sure it's significant.

It's all more or less pointless because if you want to argue efficiency, the trucks don't rank very high on the scale. Trains win that argument hands down.

If you really want to argue the issue then it should be about how many extra miles or lanes of asphalt are needed to support all the commercial trucks on the road. I'll bet it's a lot.

So I am having my first surgical procedures in *looks at widget* 16 days, and the thing that scares me the most is the general anesthesia...

In actuality, general anesthesia may be more important than the skills of the surgeon. My most vivid memory of the anesthesia given for my hernia repair years ago was when the doctor told me to count backwards from 100.

I got down into the upper 40's and wondered if that was normal. Then I heard the doctor say, "This patient is considerably more resistant than most others ... let's increase the flow." I immediately had misgivings about agreeing to the surgery at that point.

I must have drifted off seconds later because the next thing I remembered was awakening in the recovery room. The procedure went smoothly and I've never had any problems since. I would not fret much over it. Best wishes on everything.

Efoto, if you see this girl again, strike up some chit-chat, then smile and ask her casually, "Hey, would you be interested in going out sometime?" Girls don't think it's a big deal; as long as someone isn't pushy or annoying, they don't mind if someone asks, and they find it flattering, even when they say they're not interested. Just do it casually and matter-of-factly, and if she says no, no big deal. At least you won't be wondering if she's interested anymore.

'Tis the natural order of things. :) You ask, they say yes/no, you get together or shrug it off and move on.

ok, if you can spend about $1,100 US dollars then i'd go for an i7 930 system. that way it's plenty upgradeable and depending on the motherboard, you can add GPUs later.

do you plan to build yourself?

I did plan on building myself but I might get the store to do it for me. I have done HDD, GPUS, CD drives, Ram. I'm just have not done the CPU and I am affraid I will bend all the bits on it. Also all the cords that attach everywhere might confuse me, like power on button.

Would I need to overclock the 930 system, never done a thing like that before. Does it really add to the ppd, also I will be using the system myself so it will not fold 24/7.

Would a good GPU not be better then a Intel 930?

I don't think Apple will be bothered by a few bucks because Apple is the cash king.

OS media on the USB stick makes sense because it is a lot faster than DVD-ROM.

Yes and they are available on all models... Unlike the OD...

Not sure if i like the gloss black. I remember seeing PS3s that were covered in smudges and streaks. My current 360 can be cleaned fairly easy.

I also don't know about using the wifi. Its just a few more milliseconds to add onto the latency. Playing FPS I can tell the difference between 70ms, and >50ms. I had DSL and then cable last summer and could tell a difference. Round a corner and you are dead before you can even touch the trigger.

I do like how they made it smaller, and if they can quiet down the dvd drive that would be very nice. Bigger hard drive is about time. My 20GB is full just from downloading maps for Halo and COD.

My guess, tons of GSM models going to scalpers. Scalpers probably weren't surveyed. :p

As usual tons if ignorant remarks about CDMA in this thread.

CDMA as dead tech and slow? Not ignorant remark. However, GSM is also a dead tech.

    Wow! what a great concept.

Pretty much like some hybrid cars getting power from when they brake.

The fact that it generates its own electricity, yes, but the same principle no. For light to normal braking the electric motor can act as a power generator, harnessing the kinetic energy of the moving wheels. Brake pads are not involved. Its called progressive braking. Brake pads come into play when you brake hard.

too bad that's not really anything that laptops can do..unless we can attach a generator to the hard drive and use it to charge the battery when it spins down.

it's an interesting concept to use heat..i wonder how they will do it. No steam engine here.

I think I deleted/edited all the pages and categories you mentioned that you didn't have permission to change.

    Thanks

I moved the Forum Posts category into the Mac Guides category. I don't think it deserves to be listed on the main page since it's more a secondary categorisation of articles and not generally a logical place to look for something.

    That sounds sensible.

Some brief comments on the Guides category since I'm not sure everyone fully understands its purpose; it contains 'how to'-type articles as opposed to encyclopaedia-type articles, so it's not just a catch-all. Having said that, it might not be the most logical categorisation structure so I'm not completely against removing it.

I've been doing some changes, but I'll stop on this one for now. The problem with the guides category as it stands is that a lot of the articles should be somewhere else as well or just somewhere else. I think the best way forward is to give every article in it another category unless it really isn't appropriate and then go and recover any articles that are actually tips like that.

It'll need need a bit more work, but it'll make sure nothing is missed.

The new Mac Hardware/Macs categorisation seems strange. Having the extra step of having to go to the "Macs" category after going to the "Mac Hardware" category seems unnecessary and could make hardware articles hard to find.

I think you're right. Maybe its worth bringing the main articles into Mac Hardware and keeping the G3-G5 Macs in a category called G3 to G5 Macs or something.

How can something like this be for "some phones?" Doesn't make much sense to me--seems more likely to be a problem with the carrier--mine did fine figuring out it was now daylight savings time.
