Although Lovato and Joe Jonas did split shortly before she sought treatment last November, her problems were much bigger than a teenage breakup.

She told Elle: "I wouldn't credit my meltdown to a guy. There was so much other stuff in my life." Lovato has stayed mum about the details behind her struggles, but has hinted at eating disorders and self-harm.

She told the magazine she started getting bullied when she was just eight. "One of the words they called me was 'fat.' At that age, you think, 'Oh, so I don't have friends because I'm fat.'" Lovato's depression got worse through her teenage years and led her to begin cutting herself. Apparently, she covered up her wrist wounds at a 2008 event with gummy bracelets.

Now that Lovato has taken time off to nurture her emotional self, she's been glowing on red carpets and her new song, "Skyscraper," is a big hit so far.
