Go to system preferences. Open International. Drag British English to be first in the list of languages. If it's not in the list, click the Edit button to add it.

    Good stuff. :)

I never thought it would be a system-level setting...

I don't know. Does the US military usually sell its tech to the Japanese?

Seems to me that it's a technology lots of people are working on in parallel.

Nice example. Frank Whittle (http://inventors.about.com/library/inventors/bljetengine.htm) received the first jet engine patent in 1930. He had been in the Air Force, but they wouldn't sponsor his research - so the development was privately funded and finally demonstrated in 1937.

I think you're confusing fission and fusion.

Darpanet, indeed. But the web itself was developed in peacetime by a man researching at a (non military) Swiss research establishment (http://public.web.cern.ch/public/en/about/web-en.html).

The first commercial transistors were developed for telecoms by AT&T / Texas instruments (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transistor).

The integrated circuit was invented in peace time, and it's mass production was spurred as much by the Apollo program (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Integrated_circuit) as for defence.

Interestingly, defence and space are very conservative in their use of technology and CPUs. The increase in CPU power over time has clearly been motivated by commercial market forces (non military).

Yes, I don't deny that defence money does finance innovation. But that's not the same as implying that innovation wouldn't take place if it wasn't for War. That's clearly nonsense - there's plenty of civil and commercial market forces that also spur development, and the examples you've cited demonstrate a few. War is not an essential for human or technological development, although it may speed it along a little from time to time.

I don't think you understand the progress of technological advancements. You seem to have this idea that once something is thought of in bed, it's guaranteed to be on an instant bee line to world scale distribution. While it's true that many tech breakthroughs (or ideas) can be implemented rigth away, much of the most out disruptive realizations require huge investestments with no obvious guarantee of a profit.

And there is a distinguishment between nuclear reality and nuclear fantasy (fusion).
    http://www.howstuffworks.com/nuclear-power.htm

Bollocks. It is absolutely nothing to do with evolution. Opposed thumbs, brain size, bipedality, toolmaking and speech have had the most influence on our development. As to whether we have evolved past any other species, that, I would have thought, is very much up for debate.

Yea it does. To simply put it, there's no animal in between "us" and the "nearest monkey". They are all fossils. That's because in competition, we killed "our own kind" in the strugle for survival and prosperity. That is...unless you prefer the "man created in the image of some deity" explaination.

Everyone should've stopped reading at "Shaw Wu."

He is the shining example of the inanity, irrelevance, and irresponsibility of "tech analysts." It's tough not to be sour grapes when you think about how much these people must get paid...

How long can the limited supply situation be true though? I mean we're talking Intel here they must have huge amounts of manufacturing capability being ramped up for these chips. Possibly even being switched away from the production of Yonahs.

    I guess we'll see. It's literally anyone's guess.

Yeah, usually a shortage today means a surplus tomorrow. And I still have yet to see or read any tangible evidence of this shortage. Intel is very forthcoming about such shortages and they have said NOTHING. Every major PC manufacturer, even Apple with their C2D iMac systems, are shipping 2.33GHz C2D chips just as fast as anything else. All the rumors of delays are complete bunk. The people squaking over Dell's web site showing 10 to 17 days to ship a C2D XPS notebook are obviously uneducated in the ways of Dell. It always takes them 7 to 24 days to ship a system.. Always. And adjusting your CPU choice on those systems makes no difference to the ship date.

In other words, there is no shortage and no reason to even consider a shortage as a reason for the delay. Other forces are at work here... Be it Apple pride, stupidity, heat problems or just a genuine deisre to totally mind-****** their customers, Apple knows what they're doing.

I guess Apple has a problem with the free advertising, for some reason. Being associated with new technology like podcasting seems like something Apple would like to foster.

Would they prefer them to be called 'Zune-casts' ???

    I'm with ya, Onizuka!

You know what? There was an ex-MTV VJ that made his own show using a Powerbook and two mics and he called it "Podcasting." There was an issue of Wired Magazine with him on the cover damn near two years ago. People were using the term "podcast" before Apple did. Apple has no right to do thsi to teh people who've made their player the most successful MP3/Portable Media device EVER.

*kicks steve jobs in the nuts for allowing this*

Well said and that is a good thing, but at least not when it comes to UI. That is where to me Windows fails every time.

Um, the iPhone/touch (and most likely the iPad) is just barely sturdy enough for the urban dweller, I can not see it out in a battle field.

In my opinion, they should just buy OSX.

The title of this article should be:

    Mac goes to WAR:mad:

    1. Just because Apple is selling to the military doesn't mean it supports war.
    2. "Mac" is not going to war with anyone.
    3. What about all the other companies that supply stuff to the military? The military uses BIC pens and eats Nabisco products, does that mean the newspapers headlines should be "BIC and Nabisco go to WAR " too?

The 3G graph just shows how ignorant people are when choosing between ATT and Verizon.

ATT has the fastest 3G network
ATT has GSM, the standard chipset around the globe

Dropped calls and data plan are not the same thing

All this equals that people are ignorant

Maybe more people live in areas where Verizon has better coverage. There's a map for that, you know.

yeah, it would only cost them $1000+ to have someone come round to my house and do something about it, well worth the 59 they would sell the end product for

do they check everybodys IP, how do they know i wasn't at wwdc.

Exactly - why would they bother? I'm not sharing it. Plus, I paid for Jaguar (well, the computer it came on), I paid for Panther, I paid for Tiger and I'll 100% certainly be paying for Leopard when it comes out. I want to play with the new features every so often, and get myself all excited about what's to come. How exactly am I hurting Apple? They'd be fools to drive away a long time and dedicated customer by throwing legal issues at me.

This is just the beginning of eh end for PPC software. How long do you really think that Apple will support the PPC with new OS revisions? If things stay the way Steve Jobs has done in the past, 10.5 will either be the last or at most the next to last version of a PPC version of the OS.

More companies will probably start taking the easy way out. This means skipping the Universal Binary file & making it Intel Mac only.

What I'm curious about is why blindly (for a lot of people) support a very successful band, wouldn't this have been a really nice little story if people rallied to buy a track from a smaller/upcoming band? Or maybe a real charity single or for something more deserving, like them soldier blokes or whoever.

Good points, but I think you're knit-picking. A smaller and more unknown song from a smaller and more unknown band wouldn't have had the same impact. Nearly everyone has heard of RATM, and I think that's what essentially sold it. The song, band and cause, all being about rebellion.

We've tried what you said before with something called Band Aid. The first time it was rather good and useful. The second time it sucked. The Americans also tried it and it sucked as well.

I think giving money to shelter is a very good thing to do. I'd certainly hate to be spending xmas alone on the streets, especially in this weather. Soldiers have a job, and it is their choice they wanted to join the army. By all means, they should get all the help needed, but I believe helping the homeless is much more kinder. Please don't shoot me down for that, I fully respect the troops fighting for us abroad, but it was their choice to do that, where as, being homeless, isn't.

OK enough of the religious rant in this thread please. Now back to Justin info. Thanks.

Justin Long just posted an updated (revised) statement on his web site home Portal page at http://www.justinlong.net

He has removed the "Apple is paying me too much money stuff", condensed his statement about the Mac ads, talks a lot about Bruce Willis and his new Die Hard 4 dilm he is working on, and has cleaned up the formatting a bit (he uses linefeeds now).
